Bring along an item of clothing or purchase a pre-loved piece from our pop-up St Vincent de Paul stall and you can have a unique marker from the Festival stitched on by talented local makers and creators. Director of Rockhampton Art Gallery and Rockhampton River Festival Arts Program Manager, Bianca Acimovic said The Haberdashery experience mashes together the sandwich bar concept (pick your “ingredients”) while using mark making to create site specific memories with a personal spin. “Using a cloth badge or patch and simple stitching techniques, the items of apparel will be mended and marked to create a bespoke, distressed artistic response,” Ms Acimovic said. “Mark making is like doodling with thread and is about exploring a basic visual language of spontaneous lines, shapes and marks through the medium of embroidery. “Alternatively, customers can choose to stitch and mark their own garments with the guidance of Haberdashery artisans if so desired. The item will be branded with a lasting River Festival memento which will maintain memory for the wearer and lend the Festival an ongoing life force”. Staged in one of Rockhampton’s historic laneways, The Haberdashery will be dressed around a vintage sewing theme with giant cotton reels and yarn-based installations. The Haberdashery is a collaborative community initiative, made possible by a team of volunteer artisans together with the support of St Vincent de Paul and local businesses such as MM Electrical Rockhampton and Needlework Cottage in conjunction with the Rockhampton Arts Development Fund (RADF). The Haberdashery will run throughout the Festival until 5pm daily from the Denham Street end of Quay Lane.
